Listed on this page is a chart of common
reasons to create a website. You may fit into one or more
of these categories as a company or individual. Either way,

Sells products and/or services. The URL normally ends
with .com. |
| Organizational |
Advocates a group's point of view and/or belief such
as an activist group, church, or non-profit organization.
The URL often ends with .org. |
| Portal |
Usually used for research or entertainment. Portals
may list links and advertisements to other websites and
are typically categorized and searchable by keywords.
Portals that search the Internet regardless of the subject
are called Search Engines. The URL often ends
with .com and .net. |
| Government |
These websites provide information produced by government
agencies, offices, and departments. Normally this information
is highly accurate and reliable. These websites most times
end with .gov, although they may end in .com
for vanity purposes. |
| Military |
The United States armed forces (military) provides
information about upcoming & existing programs, recruitment
and job opportunities, and much more. The URL typically
ends in .mil. |
| Educational |
Schools and other educational institutions/establishments
will create websites to provide information about curriculum
and other offerings The URL normally ends in .edu. |
| Internet
Service Provider |
Internet service providers (e.g. Toneee.com, America
Online, Earthlink, etc.) create websites so that customers
may access premium services such as email, web hosting,
domain registration, and a way to connect to the internet
(e.g. dial-up, broadband, DSL, T1, etc.) The URL typically
ends in .net or .com. |

You may be a model, writer, make-up artist (MUA), actor/actress,
poet/poetess, musician, singer, artist, painter, photographer,
wedding coordinator, fashion stylist, interior decorator,
designer, or any other aspiring or professional talent
requiring an online presence. This may be considered a
business but may not harness a "corporate look &
feel", but rather an artistic appeal. The URL may
end in just about anything you want. |
| Personal |
You may want to post your family pictures, diary/blogger,
or personal opinions online. This is a personal site and
the URL may end in just about anything you want.
Your ISP may provide you with personal web space to create
your own website; however, you may need to make special
arrangements if you want to access it using your own domain
name. |
